The Directory of Self Funded Workers' Compensation (SFWC)
How the SFWC Was Researched and Some Qualifications That Apply:
If you have any questions, please contact us at 1-800-231-0669.

SOURCE OF THE DATA:

We contacted every state in the U.S. and asked for data on companies that self fund their workers compensation. Forty-five states provided us with data. The remaining states would not make the data publicly available.

Data was provided by the following states, however we do have headquarter records for all states:

USE OF INTERNAL AND THIRD PARTY SOURCES:

The only relevant data points made available by the states were the company name and address. Several states only provided a company name. Through the use of commercial databases we located and appended addresses, relevant contact data, and other information to most companies.

HEADQUARTERS AND BRANCHES:

For many companies, we were able to append a "headquarters" location. This allows us to group multiple branches of a company across multiple states. This way, we can list Company X as one entry in the database, but still provide a list of all self-funded Company X branches. The location of the headquarters may or may not be in one of the forty-five states for which we have data.

Most corporate headquarters' data include the number of employees corporate wide, telephone number, contact name, and title.

LIMITATIONS ON BRANCH LOCATIONS:

Not all states provided us with a list of all branches. For example, State X may indicate to us that Company Y self-funds in State X. However, they only provided us with Company Y's general (i.e. headquarters) contact information. Even though we do not have a list of Company Y's branches in State X, we at least know that State X is one of the states in which Company Y self-funds its workers' compensation.

The state given for a branch may not correspond to the state where that branch is listed as being self-funded. This is because the address provided by the state was for the office that managed the filing of the self-funded certification, rather than the location of actual self-funding. This disparity should not affect the end-user, as the relevant decision maker would still be located at the state-provided address.

STANDALONE COMPANIES:

There are a number of companies which are "standalone" headquarters, meaning they are not a division, branch or subsidiary of another company. Most standalones also have complete addresses, phones and contacts.

A NOTE ON POPULATIONS:

The number of companies in any one state which self-fund may be disproportionate to the population of that state. This relates to individual state laws regarding self-funded workers' compensation requirements.
